Termite Monitoring
Termite monitoring is some techniques to determine whether termites have entered your property. However, you might also want to know whether termites are living in your yard.
Traditionally, to determine whether termites are living in your yard, you typically try to find termites by disturbing mulch on flower bed, digging mud or dirt in damp areas and wood piles, lifting any covering on the ground that can keep moisture. However, if you don't find any termites, there is no guarantee that your yard is free of termites. Ruan's Termite Solution provides the most effective way to truly detect whether termites are living in your yard.
To inspect whether termites have entered your house, there are several evidences you should look for.
-
Mud tubes - Subterranean termites live underground and they cannot be exposed to open air for long time. In order for them to create a covered path from the ground to the wooden structure in your property, they create mud tubes on the foundation wall, as shown in the figure on right. If you see mud tubes on your foundation, it is a clear evidence that termites have entered your property or they are going to enter soon. If you have a crawl space, you should check there for mud tubes too.
- Swarmers or wings- If you see swarmers or tiny wings left by swarmers inside your house, it is quite likely termites have entered your property. Swarmers are flying termites which are ready to start their own colonies. If you see swarmers outside of your house, it normally is not an immediate concern.
- Hollow Wood - Tap the wood where near the ground such as basement to make sure whether you hear a hollow sound. When termites infested your property, they attempt to make themselves hidden. So if you just look at the wood, you may not see big difference. However, termites eat wood inside, if you tap the wood, you could hear hollow sound. Also you can try to push a screw driver into wood to check whether the wood is still solid.
- Inspect walls and trimmers of rooms to see any sign of termite damages such as bubbling walls (termites eat away the cardboard of dry wall to cause bubbles). Or you might see termites droppings (pellets) in your room. Termites droppings are capsular shaped solid wastes about 1 millimeter long.
